Legislation was slowly introduced in the 19th century to improve working conditions in factories.The first of these was the 1833 Factory Act which banned children under the age of nine from working textile factories. Steam power was the driving force for much of the Industrial Revolution in the United Kingdom and United States. Although he had some tough rules in his factories - including fining workers if they whistled on the job or were caught staring out of the window) but he also did a lot of good things for them, such as building homes for employees, as well as establish churches and helping to educate child workers. Richard Arkwright, the pioneer of the factory system, was regarded as one of the good ones. Many were machines with the sole purpose to do labour faster and more efficiently than people. When James Watt created a much more efficient steam engine in 1769, his invention changed. An Industrial Revolution is the process whereby a society changes from an agrarian economy and adopts a modern economy dominated by industries, machines, and technology. There were many advances in machinery, power, mining and transportation during this time. Another important industrial revolution invention was the Newcomen Engine. Naturally there were good and bad factory owners in terms of how they treated their employees. The industrial revolution took place between about 17 but there is no definite beginning or end. Young children and women were employed as cheap labour and given little training or safety provisions. Water power varied with the seasons, and was not available at times due to. Early mills had run successfully with water power, but by using a steam engine a factory could be located anywhere, not just near water. Working hours were long and conditions were often terrible. The steam engine was used in many industrial settings, especially mining, where the first engines pumped water from deep workings. ![]() ![]() The desire to maximise profits meant that health and safety was all but ignored in factories. ![]()
